Inside the Press: Bringing Clarity to 3D Pressing Processes
How data, process insight and testing are transforming 3D pressing performance.
3D pressing, also known as membrane or vinyl pressing, is used to form decorative panels for products such as kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture.
At Hybond, we help manufacturers take the guesswork out of the process. Through live data capture, process analysis and laboratory testing, we provide valuable insight into what is happening inside the press, improving consistency, product quality and bond performance.
UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGES OF 3D PRESSING
Whilst 3D pressing is a well-established manufacturing process, achieving consistent results can be challenging.
Manufacturers can experience a range of issues, including:
- Delamination
- Edge failures
- Poor finishes on high gloss foils
These problems can result in rejected products, increased waste, reduced efficiency and unnecessary downtime.
In many cases, attempts to improve bonding performance can create further problems.
Press temperatures may be increased in an effort to achieve a stronger bond, only for foil finishes to become damaged or distorted.
The challenge is that the root cause of these issues is not always obvious.
Whilst the symptoms are visible on the finished product, what is happening inside the press itself often remains unknown.
SEEING WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE THE PRESS
The answer to many 3D pressing problems lies somewhere most people never get to see: inside the press, during the cycle itself.
Until now, most manufacturers have relied on temperature strips as their only window into the process. These give a single, limited indication of peak temperature at one point on the panel surface, with no data on pressure, humidity, timing or variation across the press bed. It is a blunt instrument for diagnosing what is, in reality, a complex and variable process.
The Hybond Intelligent Press Profiler is a fundamentally different approach.
It is an intelligent data logging panel that travels through the customer’s press in exactly the same way as a standard production panel, fitting into the normal production run without disrupting the line.
As it travels through, the Profiler captures a data sample every second of the pressing cycle, recording:
- Vinyl surface temperature, via a non-contact infrared thermometer
- Top surface and side surface temperatures, via built-in RTD sensors
- Humidity change throughout the process, via a built-in hygrometer
- Pressure on the panel during the pressing phase, via a built-in load cell
- Full process timings from start to finish
The unit also features a series of LED indicator lights, giving an immediate on-the-spot visual signal as to whether the critical edge temperature has been reached during the cycle.

FROM DATA TO BETTER PERFORMANCE
Once the run is complete, the data is fed into Hybond’s bespoke process analysis software. The Profiler is run multiple times at different positions across the press bed, building a thorough picture of conditions from one zone to another rather than at a single point. Results are presented as a simple, colour-coded traffic light chart.
Green indicates that a critical parameter is within acceptable limits; red flags exactly where it was not, and why.
It is often the less obvious variations that explain the most persistent problems. A temperature inconsistency in one zone, a pressure drop at a critical point, or a dwell time that falls marginally short can be enough to cause delamination, edge failures or surface defects on the finished product. Without the data, these variations remain effectively invisible.
Where profiling highlights a concern, Hybond supports the findings with laboratory testing, including peel testing and ascending heat testing, to understand how the adhesive and bond are performing under real conditions. This gives manufacturers a complete, evidence-based picture of their process. Targeted adjustments can then be made with confidence, rather than through trial and error.
FROM THE PRESS TO THE LABORATORY – THE COMPLETE HYBOND SOLUTION
Back at our Shropshire headquarters, pressed panels undergo further testing to verify bond performance and confirm findings from the press. Findings are compiled into a comprehensive Technical Service Report, presented in a clear, easy-to-understand format that manufacturers can use to benchmark their process, track improvements over time and take targeted action with confidence.
That confidence extends further still. With more than 25 years of adhesive expertise, Hybond ensures manufacturers have the right adhesive for the job, reliably supplied and fully supported, making it a complete solution from a single specialist team.
